In 2014, Van Cleef & Arpels set about reducing the dimensions of the planetarium to fit the scale of the wrist. Thus was born the Midnight Planetarium™ watch, representing the planets' journey through the solar system within a timepiece of great complexity. In 2022, eight years after the unveiling of its Planetarium collection, Van Cleef & Arpels revisited this now-iconic concept with a new Objet Extraordinaire™, further enriching its Poetic Astronomy™ universe. In 2023, the Maison presented a variation of the automaton in a novel combination of materials. The Sun is adorned with yellow sapphires, spessartine garnets, and diamonds, set on 500 gold rods, giving it an effect of both depth and lightness. Suggesting the vastness of the cosmos, black aventurine glass discs set with graduated diamonds follow one another concentrically within the dial, seven of which are individually animated by the movement.
